To generations of European immigrants, the deep cultural connections of classical music from their homelands provided connection and renewal in America. Probing one region of this artistic heritage, SBC’s opening concert will unearth underperformed European chamber music masterworks, alongside a modern work about Planet Earth for horn and fixed media.

Taking place at the Center for Maine Contemporary Art in Rockland, this “Sculptures of Sound” performance will be paired in conjunction with an exhibition featuring a Maine sculpture.

Composer and cellist Karen Ouzounian explores her family’s Anatolian-Armenian and Lebanese roots and the significance of old music in a new world. Alongside her own compositions, French Baroque music is interwoven with original arrangements of Armenian folk music and the recorded voices of Karen’s mother and grandmother in this meditation on inheritance and the passage of time.
